16 January 2008: CM&D acquires rights to Fostrap™ for the treatment of hyperphosphataemia
Chertsey, UK, 16th January, 2008. CM&D Pharma Limited (CM&D), the European niche specialty company, today announced the acquisition of its inaugural development product, Fostrap, from the inventor, Professor Vincenzo Savica, Chair of Nephrology at the University of Messina Medical School, Italy.
Fostrap is designed to benefit patients who have abnormally high blood levels of phosphorus (hyperphosphataemia) as a result of kidney malfunction or renal failure. Hyperphosphataemia is a prime cause of vascular calcification and may lead to patients suffering additional clinical complications in the form of heart disease, bone disease and joint problems.
The novelty of CM&D’s products lies in their potential to start binding phosphorus in the saliva. Fostrap will be developed as complementary to current therapies so as to offer another pharmacological tool to doctors in their daily fight against hyperphosphataemia.
Fostrap will be presented as a pleasant-tasting chewing gum, which will allow for a wide range of dosing options.
Danilo Casadei Massari, Corporate Development Director for CM&D, said:
‘The acquisition of this intellectual property represents a major milestone in CM&D’s own development. We are particularly pleased that this is represented by such an exciting compound which has such possibilities for clinicians and patients alike.’
The clinical development of Fostrap will start in Q2 2008, with an anticipated launch in the first market expected in 2010.
